Speed improvements with importing multiple ASCII files (survey data)

This Tech Tip explains the speed improvements made in build 4 of Civil Designer 2013, when importing multiple ASCII files (survey data)


Importing the data

Once the Project settings have been set and you have created the dtm (dt7) file. The ASCII files will be imported

File Menu Import ASCII YXZ Multiple Files

Civil Designer will ask for confirmation that all data files to be imported are of the same import format.

Click Yes, if all the imported files have the same format.

Hold down the Shift key and then select the files you wish to import (if you select the top file and then the last file, all the files will be selected)

The Import ASCII File dialog will appear, based on the preview make the correct settings to import the file (note the data shown in the lower portion of the dialog is only a preview, the entire files contents are not listed)

Click Next to continue.

Assign names to the various columns in the ASCII file, right click on each column to assign a name.

Once the names have been defined, click on Finish

The various files will be scanned and then the Destination Surface Selection dialog will appear.

We imported 3 348 327 points split over 7 x 22.6 MB files in just 1min 33sec.
