VERSATILE ROAD DESIGN PROGRAM
This module is a comprehensive road design program that provides interactive embankment design, intersections and area calculations for urban streets, single/dual carriageway roads, railways, airports, harbours and parking areas.

The module also includes regression analysis of the alignment of existing roads, sight distance checks and climbing/passing lane calculations.

In Road Strings, we have developed an underlying triangle mesh structure that utilizes state of the art spatial indexing and triangle connectivity strategies. This results in faster redraws of roads and intersection volume calculations as well as better validation of the translated DTM surface




 
 


HANDLES MORE THAN 400KM OF ROAD EFFORTLESSLY WITH 250 DIFFERENT ROADS PER PROJECT

The Roads module has been used to design single or dual carriageway roads of over 400km in length, with up to 250 different roads per project. It has also been used to design split horizontal and vertical alignments where roads have been built through difficult terrain.

Several functions have been enhanced to make road rehabilitation easier and faster including:
  • Horizontal and vertical alignment regression analysis removes co-linear points.
  • Extract alignments from a terrain strings model.
  • Extract road edge data and layerwork limits from CAD entities.
  • Crowned dual carriageways.
  • Median connection options (connect at a grade or include existing median features from DTM).
  • Enhanced interface for string extraction.
  • Variable size components that can be used to model retaining walls, etc.





Sheetflow Analysis  

Sheetflow / Aquaplaning Analysis

This generates a colour gradient indicating calculated water depth at each point on the road surface for a given rainfall intensity allowing for Sheetflow (otherwise known as aquaplaning or hydroplaning) analysis.





Road Strings Intersection  

Superfast intersection, cul-de-sac and roundabout design using Road Strings

Road Strings Intersection, Mini-Roundabout and Cul-de-Cac design wizards allow for very quick and easy design perimeter input of intersections with lead in and out tapers, centre radii, traffic islands, kerbs, layerworks, traffic circle radii in and out, traffic circle crossfalls or crowns and cul-de-sac offset left or right, round or symmetrical designs. These can be saved to libraries for instant re-use in existing or future projects.

For complicated roundabouts with more than 4 incoming legs, the challenge of designing the vertical alignment can be handled in the 2015 version using the Stockdale method. Crown lines on the roundabout circle and on the approach roads are indicated such that their convergence (or 'kiss-points') provide the framework for the Vertical alignment.

The Road Control Panel allows you to set up the basic parameters of a road easily by allowing you to define the template, road widths and cross falls and road surfaces in one window. Road templates make it easy to design the road profile and view the end result. We also include a test function when working with road templates so that you can immediately see how the end product is going to function. The Powerful New Template Editor has interactive design for compulsory additions, cut and fill slopes, kerbs and layerworks. Pre-defined features such as retaining walls, side drains, sidewalks, parking areas added to the template by drag and drop. Import road template control points from a drawing as well as create a CAD drawing from a road template.

You can automatically display symbols at low or high points along the road edge string. This is useful to determine the positions of kerb inlets, or to highlight drainage problem areas at sections of super elevation development.





Road Components  

Roads Components

Components are super building blocks for templates giving you the flexibility to create and apply a typical cross section template and then add additional or remove existing components from individual cross sections using the Cross Section Editor or the Edge Control spreadsheet.

Now you may use one template and easily modify it with components to suit local conditions such as cut/fill, side drains, crash barriers, retaining walls, etc. An example would be forcing the use of a side drain through alternating cut/fill conditions, or adding a gutter, parking bay and sidewalk.





Extract Road design  

Extract an entire road design from a 3D CAD drawing

Civil Designer can extract the horizontal and vertical alignments as well as the road's super elevation from a 3D CAD drawing. This existing design information can then be used as a starting point for any:
  • Vertical and horizontal re-alignment
  • Road widenings
  • New/upgraded intersections
  • Design speed verification
  • Sight distance analysis
  • Speed profiling for climbing lanes.

GRAPHICAL OR SPREADSHEET DESIGN TOOLS

Quickly switch between alignment views or data sheet information using tabs on the same page and access all the relevant design tools and functions for the vertical alignment and super elevation. The graphical display will show all relevant information and allow you to insert, add or modify control points. Additional information on vertical curves and grades are dynamically displayed in an information box in the top of the window as you move. Crossing services from the sewer, storm, water modules and other services in the services database can be displayed when designing the vertical alignment as well as the Cross Section Editor.

Civil Designer's Strings based roads design functionality includes dynamic contouring and slope arrows. This provides the Roads Designer with a real time indication and verification of the design's slope integrity and stormwater behaviour. Blacktop flat slope tolerances (%) warnings can also be set.

Civil Designer's Intersection Plan Sheetfile allows for a dynamically update-able intersection setting out an information table for construction drawings.

Create production drawings - layout plans, long/cross sections

Production drawings such as plans, cross and long sections, or any combination thereof, with title blocks and company logos etc can be created with little or no CAD editing. The layout of production drawings is completely customizable according to your specific company standards. Civil Designer will even automatically calculate the sheet positions based on the horizontal alignment and the specified overlap between sheets. These drawings can be set to update automatically as you change your design.





LOCAL ROAD DESIGN STANDARDS MAKES YOUR LIFE EASIER

It is easier to design a road or road pavement with Civil Designer as it comes with South African standards including TRH 17 for the horizontal and vertical alignments as well as the super elevation, TRH 4 for the layerworks (pavement classes) and SABS 927 kerbs.





HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL ALIGNMENT ACCORDING TO TRH17

The horizontal alignment stake position is dynamically displayed on the plan view so you know exactly where the horizontal curves are. The vertical alignment function allows you to display up to 20 profiles such as the ground line at centre line plus the left and right road reserves while the grade envelope will guide you according to the design criteria. While designing the horizontal and vertical alignment the program will warn the user when specified design criteria has been exceeded.





SUPER ELEVATION SLAVED TO HORIZONTAL ALIGNMENT

Civil Designer will calculate the super elevation and run off lengths based on the horizontal curves according to the TRH17 standards or custom standards including reverse, compound and broken-back curves. You may also choose to specify the super elevation independent of the horizontal curves.





PAVEMENT DESIGNER WITH TRH4 PAVEMENT CLASSES

You can create various pavement libraries containing several manually defined pavement designs and these files can then be used throughout an organization. The pavement symbol can automatically be generated on cross section plots.





KERB EDITOR WITH SABS 927 KERBS

The kerb editor allows you create a kerb group file containing one or more kerbs. Each kerb contains cross sectional geometry and quantities data. Kerbs can be specified in the Edge Level specifications. You are then able to calculate kerb quantities and plot cross sections that includes the kerbs.





INTELLIGENT PROFILE SELECTION  

INTELLIGENT PROFILE SELECTION FOR MULTIPLE CUT/FILL CONDITIONS

Edge conditions, drainage and batter slopes are automatically adjusted on the road profile according to your specified cut and fill conditions. This means that you can automatically have different road widths, side drains, retaining walls and cut/fill slopes according to the depth/height of cut or fill.





ROAD EXPERT AUTOMATES RECALCULATIONS

The Road Expert allows you to keep track of what you have done and automates the recalculations in the event of changes to the design.





Import and export LandXML road data for greater data portability

Civil Designer can Import and Export DTM, Roads, Sewer, Storm and Water data to and from a LandXML file.





CREATE MULTIPLE DESIGN CODES

You can create multiple design codes for horizontal and vertical alignment as well as super-elevation and simply load the one you require for a particular job. Roads will determine the horizontal curve radii, vertical curve lengths and super-elevation based on the design criteria for the design speed.





MINIMUM SIGHT DISTANCE CHECK WITH FULL 3D ANALYSIS

Calculate the areas along the road alignment where the driver cannot see a specified object over a specified minimum sight distance. The problem areas will be marked in a specified pen colour on both the vertical or horizontal alignments. The calculations take into account if the driverís sight is obstructed by vertical curves, horizontal bends, cuttings and drains or a combination thereof. The calculations will include ground points beyond the road toe point within the road reserve.





CLIMBING AND AUXILIARY LANE ANALYSIS WITH SPEED PROFILING

This calculation automatically suggests climbing lanes based on the Speed Profile analysis of the vertical alignment. Precise control of the road edge levels allows you to apply complex super-elevation conditions and it makes provision for changes in lane widths for climbing lanes or auxiliary lanes. You can create auxiliary lanes by specifying the lane width, start and end position, the taper lead-in and lead-out length and the layer works template to be applied.





ROAD REHABILITATION FUNCTION

Extract the theoretical alignment of a surveyed road from the DTM model. The Road Rehabilitation function will pick up the horizontal alignment from CAD lines and arcs or by indicating two points on each straight and one point on each curve. Once you have a horizontal alignment, the routine will automatically extract a theoretical vertical alignment (VPI's and curve radii) as well as the super elevation from the survey.





Edge Level Graphical View

The Edge Level graphical view now includes the vertical alignment with an option to display the left and right road edges, thereby allowing you to see the effects of the combination of vertical alignment and super-elevation on the road edge levels.





MULTIPLE CROSS SECTIONS PER ROAD

Cross sections are stored up to 250 road layers. You can keep track of construction progress by recording each monthís results in a separate layer and calculate cut and fill volumes between any two layers with topsoil stripping and bulking or compaction factors. The feature allows you to extract up to 20 long sections from any of the 250 layers to define ground lines, intermediate or hard material lines at user defined offsets on long section drawings.





ROAD QUANTITIES WITH LAYERWORKS

Road quantities are calculated from cross sections using the end area method, adjusted by a compaction factor and topsoil stripping. The results include:
  • Unadjusted cut and fill volumes
  • Adjusted cut available for fill
  • Adjusted excess cut
  • Adjusted fill shortfall
  • Topsoil stripping
  • Bank areas
  • Topsoil cover
The module further supplies COLTO slope finishing quantities. Layerwork volumes can be calculated and will yield the total volume for each layer as well as layerwork volumes for each layer in cut and fill, and the preparation area for each layer in cut and fill.





CROSSING SERVICES

You can specify additional services such as telecommunication ducts, electrical cables etc. These services can then be displayed on the plan layout and as crossing services on long and cross sections and viewed/edited in spreadsheet form. Crossing services will be included on layout plans, long and cross section production drawings.





HANDLES MULTIPLE BACKDROP DISPLAYS OF HUGE SIZES

Display a bitmap showing the natural features, the cadastral layout drawing or the site contours while defining the horizontal alignment graphically by indicating the position of the HPIs. Once the HPIs have been defined you can drag them to modify the alignment. Route planning has never been easier.





DRAWING TEMPLATES (SHEET FILES)

Using our drawing templates (sheet files), you can generate production drawings with detailed title blocks, north signs, grids, company logos, annotations, data lists, scale bars and much more so that your plotting requires little, if any, CAD editing. No longer do you have to cut and paste your design into your title block as our flexible sheet files allow the precise placement of all the design elements in your title block with customizable settings. Our powerful sheet files allow you to define exactly what the final production drawings should look like saving you hours of postproduction CAD editing.





3D Roads design  

RENDERED 3D VIEW

This road design was modelled using the Roads module and then rendered within Civil Designer's CAD module. 'Drive' down the completed road in a rendered 3D view to check for blind rises and other anomalies (requires Survey & Terrain module). The program uses a 3D algorithm that takes vertical curves, horizontal curves and cross sections into account.
